Notes |
- Michael was left in Ireland when his parents and grandparents emigrated. His parents attempted to bring him and his cousin Arthur McNally to NSW when he was 15 but that did not eventuate. When he was 20 he did arrive to live with his family, stayed on the farm at Liverpool for some years then disappeared. Maybe he returned to Ireland.
He came on the “Merlin” leaving UK on Sep 24, 1853 arriving January 1854.
On 15 Feb 1858, Owen applied through Remittance Regulations for Owen, 20, labourer from Ederney, Co Fermanagh to immigrate to NSW.
Mr James Sommerville of Drumgowna, Co Fermanagh was the reference for Michael. Owen paid 4 pounds remittance.
On 16 November 1858 20 year old farm labourer, Michael Barrett arrived on “Mary Pleasants” in Sydney. Stated as RC, could neither read nor write.
In St Joseph’s Ederney parish registers, there is an baptismal entry for 1837 for a Michael Barrett. This could be our Michael Barrett or Mick the Fenian.
- A Michael Barrett baptised 1 April 1837 at Josephs RC Church, Ederney. Could be this Michael Barrett or the Fenian Michael Barrett.
After 1860 I could find no record of this Michael Barrett. Did he go to NYC? Did he return to Ireland? Was he the Fenian - do not think so!!!!
